ASG Eye Hospital Launches Diwali Initiative: Free Consultation and Surgery for Children Under 15year of age with Firecracker-Related Eye Injuries!

Surat, (Gujarat) [India] 16th October, 2025: ASG Eye Hospital, a leading eye care institution committed to “Only the Best” in vision health, is excited to announce its special initiative for the Diwali season. In view of the increasing risk of firecracker-related accidents during the festivities, the hospital is offering free consultation and necessary surgeries for children under 15 years of age who suffer eye injuries caused by firecrackers. This service will be available at all ASG Eye Hospital centers from October 15 to 24, 2025. To ensure accessible and high-quality care, patients will only need to bear the cost of pharmacy, anesthesia, and optical services.

According to Dr. Shailen Patel, Chief Ophthalmologist at ASG Eye Hospital, Firecracker-related eye injuries continue to be a major public health concern during Diwali, often leading to severe and irreversible damage. According to national data from 2023, more than 2,000 cases of eye injuries caused by firecrackers were reported across India, with nearly 60% involving children under the age of 15, and around 10% resulting in permanent vision loss. These figures highlight the urgent need for preventive measures to protect vulnerable groups and ensure a safe celebration. Studies indicate that up to 20% of emergency eye trauma cases during festive periods are caused by firecrackers, with children under 15 accounting for nearly 30%, and 85% of those affected being male. This initiative underscores ASG Eye Hospital’s commitment to community welfare, promoting a safe Diwali celebration, and preventing vision loss among young children in our country.

Tips to Prevent Eye Injuries During Diwali Festivities

ASG Eye Hospital experts recommend the following safety measures to avoid firecracker-related eye injuries:

  • Always wear protective eyewear such as safety glasses or goggles while handling or being near firecrackers to protect against sparks, debris, or harmful chemicals.
  • Maintain a safe distance of at least 5–6 meters while lighting firecrackers, and use open, spacious areas away from flammable materials or crowds.
  • Always supervise children around firecrackers. Do not allow them to handle or light fireworks without adult supervision. Ideally, they should remain spectators at a safe distance, as they are particularly vulnerable.
  • Avoid using homemade or illegal firecrackers, which are unstable and more dangerous. Instead, opt for certified, eco-friendly alternatives that emit less smoke and are designed for safety.
  • Do not hold firecrackers in your hands while lighting them, and never lean over or approach a firecracker to check if it has ignited—use a long incense stick or punk to light it.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after handling fireworks to prevent accidental transfer of chemicals to the eyes.
  • Never attempt to relight or pick up dud firecrackers. Instead, soak them in a bucket of water from a safe distance.
  • Keep a bucket of water, sand, or a fire extinguisher nearby for unexpected fires or emergency washing.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol or any substance that impairs judgment while handling fireworks, as it increases the risk of accidents.
  • In case of an eye injury, do not rub, wash, or apply pressure to the eye. Do not attempt to remove any object stuck in the eye, apply ointments, or take blood-thinning painkillers such as aspirin. Seek immediate professional medical attention to minimize permanent damage.
