HPV Is Not Just a Women’s Issue: Dr. Uday Kumar Punukollu Explains Why Both Men and Women Need Vaccination for Cancer Prevention

Human papillomavirus (HPV) has long been associated primarily with cervical cancer in women. However, leading oncology guidelines now emphasize that HPV is a gender-neutral cancer risk, responsible for a growing number of cancers in both men and women. Medical experts stress that vaccinating all eligible individuals, regardless of gender, is a critical step in cancer prevention. Dr. Udaykumar Punukollu, a Medical Oncologist in Hyderabad, highlights that HPV is linked not only to cervical cancer but also to oropharyngeal (throat), anal, penile, vulvar, and vaginal cancers.

“HPV is often misunderstood as a women-only health issue because of its association with cervical cancer. In reality, men are equally susceptible to HPV-related cancers, especially cancers of the throat and anal region, which are increasing globally,” he explains

According to recommendations from leading international oncology bodies such as ESMO, ASCO, and NCCN, HPV vaccination is a proven, effective cancer-prevention strategy for both sexes. The vaccine protects against high-risk HPV strains that are responsible for the majority of HPV-associated cancers. HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections worldwide. While most infections clear spontaneously, persistent infection with high-risk HPV types can lead to cancer years or even decades later. Vaccination, when given at the recommended age preferably before exposure to the virus offers long-term protection and significantly reduces cancer risk.

“Vaccination works best as a preventive measure. It is far more effective to prevent HPV-related cancers than to treat them after they develop,” Dr. Punukollu notes.

“This is why global guidelines strongly recommend HPV vaccination for both boys and girls.”

Beyond vaccination, experts also stress the importance of screening and early detection, particularly for cervical cancer, alongside lifestyle awareness and safe health practices. Dr. Punukollu emphasizes that a comprehensive cancer prevention strategy must include education, vaccination, and timely medical consultation. As an oncologist involved in both cancer treatment and prevention, Dr. Punukollu actively works to educate patients, parents, and the general public about evidence-based strategies to reduce cancer burden. He advocates for wider acceptance of HPV vaccination in boys and men to break the chain of transmission and lower overall cancer incidence.

“HPV-related cancers are largely preventable. Recognizing that HPV affects everyone, not just women is a crucial step toward reducing avoidable cancers in the future,” he adds.
