The Entrepreneurial Mindset: A Deeper Conversation with Shoumyadeep Ghosh

Managing Director & Chairman — D S Motors, Teliamura, Tripura, India

For Shoumyadeep Ghosh, the most significant shift in his entrepreneurial journey was never about money or title. It was about how he learned to think. In the early days, his question was simple: how can I make this work? With experience, it evolved into how can I make this work consistently, and eventually, how can I build a system that continues running even when I am not personally involved in every decision. That progression, he says, marks the real transformation — from solving problems one at a time to building systems, culture and customer experience that prevent problems from recurring.

What people often miss about his journey, he explains, is everything that happens behind the visible milestones — the showroom, the designation, the achievements. What they don’t see are the years of uncertainty, operational pressure and continuous learning that produced those outcomes. Entrepreneurship looks glamorous from the outside; from the inside, it is mostly responsibility, patience and decision-making. The public sees the result. The entrepreneur lives the process — and that is where the real learning happens.

On risk, uncertainty and emotional discipline

Ghosh doesn’t chase risk for excitement. Before any significant decision, he weighs the upside against the downside, tests his assumptions, and asks what the organisation can control and absorb if things go wrong. The goal isn’t to eliminate risk — that’s impossible — but to understand it well enough to act intelligently. He has also made peace with incomplete information, relying on a combination of data, experience, scenario planning and judgement rather than waiting for certainty that may never arrive. Emotion, he believes, can’t be removed from leadership, but it can be disciplined: avoid irreversible decisions in anger, avoid overestimating opportunities in excitement, and never underestimate the team in disappointment. One question he returns to before major decisions: will this still make sense five years from now?

On customers, loyalty and integrity

Ghosh’s biggest lesson from customers has been humility — a strong plan and an experienced team mean little if the customer doesn’t find the experience valuable. He points out that people rarely buy just a product; they buy confidence, convenience, trust and hope. A two-wheeler, for instance, can mean transportation to one person and independence to another. Loyalty, in his view, isn’t built through a single great interaction but through repeated, accumulated trust — which is why he places heavy emphasis on retention and customer lifetime value over pure acquisition. Transparency follows the same logic: communicating honestly about limitations, costs and mistakes protects credibility even when the truth is uncomfortable. Given a choice between short-term profit and long-term reputation, he consistently chooses the latter, calling reputation an asset that compounds over time.

On learning, competition and self-improvement

Seniority, Ghosh insists, doesn’t make anyone an expert in everything — if anything, it raises the stakes for continuous learning, whether through books, data, mistakes or conversations with frontline employees who often understand customers better than reports do. He considers reflection an essential entrepreneurial habit, regularly asking what worked, what failed and what should change. He’s candid about what he’s still working on: delegating better, listening more deeply, and separating what’s urgent from what’s actually important. On competition, he treats it as intelligence rather than a threat, studying what rivals do well without copying blindly. And he names overconfidence as the most dangerous trait a successful entrepreneur can develop — past success brings experience, not certainty, which is why humility matters more as an organisation grows.

On strategy, digital change and identity

Growth, for Ghosh, must be earned through people, systems, financial discipline and customer loyalty before it’s scaled — capability before size. He sees confusing activity with strategy as one of the biggest mistakes businesses make, and believes data should sharpen judgement rather than replace it. Social media, he notes, has shifted control of the brand narrative from companies to the public conversation itself, making authenticity non-negotiable — including in personal branding, which he insists must reflect real values rather than curated self-promotion. As an entrepreneur from Tripura, he carries a sense of regional responsibility, believing local roots and global standards can coexist rather than compete.

On family, legacy and what comes next

Family, he says, keeps ambition in perspective, reminding him that life extends beyond the balance sheet. He views failure not as a single event but as part of an ongoing experiment — the only real failure being repeating the same mistake without learning from it. What he hopes employees remember is that they learned something valuable during their time with him; what he hopes customers remember is simply that they could depend on D S Motors. Looking ahead, his focus is institutional maturity — strengthening systems, leadership and digital capability so the organisation depends less on individual intervention and more on the people and processes behind it.
